Facebook: Know how many People have Hidden Your Page Updates?

by Ryan Shell on May 6, 2010

You know that nifty little feature in the Facebook news feed that allows you to hide updates from applications, people and pages? Ever wondered how many people have hidden your page?

Now, thanks to an enhancement to the page insights you no longer have to wonder. To find the info:

  • Go to the Insights section of the page dashboard
  • Click “All Page Insights”
  • Scroll down to the box that says “All fans of….”
  • The number of fans that have hidden your updates should be represented by the yellow line

The chart below is an example of what you should be looking for.

One might imagine that all pages will have people that hide the updates, but if your number is substantial, you might take a moment to check your content and make sure it’s on point.

And on a random note, I’ve not figured out what we’re calling people that have “Liked” a page. They can’t be “likes” – that’s just dumb. Page members? Who knows…

I had no idea about this Ryan. Facebook is so dense and not always easy to unerstand (or keep up with!) it’s wonderful to learn something new. Thanks for this great info!

I have to admit I didn’t even know this feature existed. What’s even more useful (for me, at least) is the availability of demographics. Who knew?

I still think you call them Fans – frankly, I’m hoping FB drops the Like crap on Fan pages and goes back to Become a Fan.

  • Ryan Shell

    Kelly, glad I could help!

Randy, it’s relatively new I think. The demo info has always been there and is def useful in terms of learning more about the audience.

    Ryan,

Here is the information I found after reading your comment. I still have not the Insight tab on the left. Do you have to put it there?

How will Page Admins know how engaged their fans are?
Powerful reporting and insight tools are provided free to Page Admins….
Powerful reporting and insight tools are provided free to Page Admins. On a cumulative and week-over-week basis, these granular reports will measure reach (e.g., impressions, clicks), viral impact (e.g., fan adds), responder insights (e.g., gender and age), and engagement (e.g., video plays and wall posts) of visitors to the Page. One advantage of using the applications designed by Facebook is the ability to receive these free, regular, detailed updates on the growth of the page

Vicki, I’m a bit confused, but will take a stab at providing help.

For starters this is for a page, not a profile so make sure we’re talking about the same page. To get to the Insight section, go to your pages homepage, then under the page photo (same as a profile photo) click Edit Page. On the next page about midway down on the right look for Insights.

    Hope that’s helpful.

I cannot find the “insights section”. I’m looking at the top bar of the Facebook page, assuming it’s the “dashboard”. The only place I see I can look into for “Insights” is under “Account”.

    From there, I’m lost.

So help me get to first base on this.

    thanks, man.

Ryan, Thanks for this info. I would appreciate it, if you could provide additional information on best ways to track and report on Facebook and Twitter Performance.

    Ryan

On average ,what percentage of people who have chosen to hide the page update from their wall feed is normal and shows success?for social marketing standards

    thank you

  • Lisa

Yes I would like to know the same Steve and wish we could see who had hid us as well… why “like” only to hide the newsfeed. I have 1500 members and 42 hides, I wonder if thats a bad thing?

  • Brad

    Hey Lisa–

    I have a page 929 fans and 24 hidden. I think we are probably within a good range (about 2.5 – 3%).

I also work at large agency and work on national fb pages. One client has around 5,000,000 fans and around 245,000 hidden. Around 5%. This specific page is considered extremely successful – obviousy on a different scale as ours.

  • Ryan Shell

Brad, thanks for sharing that info. The concept of having page updates hidden is probably overlooked in a big way.
