“Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark”

by Ryan Shell on December 21, 2009

One of the folks I follow on Twitter is @Jenny2229. She’s a fellow marketer that tends to tweet about topics related to the field.

Earlier today she sent a tweet about advertising  that I thought was not only funny, but also a good explanation of why advertising is important.

“Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing, but nobody else does.”

What a great line!

Would probably need to be the ones with night vision… but I’m thinking you’ll have a hard time finding one.

Night Goggles? :) I’d go with the direct approach. Works every time! Thanks for the great post.

Brock and I agree, as does Jack. It’s a real film and we need to make people aware.

Wow, this totally caught me off guard… What a true statement! We wait for people to show up, wonder why no one has, and then realize that we never said a word… Hmmmmm, thanks!!

If you’re already hanging out with a girl in the dark then winking is likely unnecessary

But what happens when you wink at the girl, her big boyfriend sees you, and suddenly you’re running for your life? I prefer to be remarkable, and let the girl come to me.

    Let’s take this full circle.

Matt if you are interested, but she isn’t, you’re going to be waiting a long time. You’d be better off “advertising” that you are interested, even if it’s something simple like saying “Hi, my name is Matt. How are you?”

    What a funny discussion… about advertising. :)

Nice, interesting considering yesterday was the darkest day of the year… better turn the lights on!
