Does Size Matter?

by Ryan Shell on January 4, 2010

In terms of writing, I definitely think brevity wins.

Size also matters for paragraphs. I’m a big fan of keeping them short – three to four sentences max. Doing so keeps you on point and helps keep the readers attention.

What’s your take? Keep it short or draw it out?

This is a loaded question! But YES size matters and for this particular instance, I’d say keep it short and sweet. To the point, direct is always better. Should you get a lot of feedback then perhaps you need to touch upon it more thoroughly and address any comments or questions. Overall you are correct, short and sweet.

In terms of writing? It really depends on the kind of writing, doesn’t it? The purpose of a paragraph is usually to convey an idea and support it. That may require a few sentences or several, personal preferences not withstanding.

Business writing, friendly correspondence, blog comments, persuasive writing, expository writing and narrative prose (in all its forms) each have their own requirements and in many cases, less is less.
