Bettering the Facebook Fan Experience

by Ryan Shell on February 23, 2010

I’ve been talking a lot about Facebook pages lately, and will probably continue to do so as I make new observations and learn things you might find valuable.

My employers Facebook page continues to add new fans (which is great), but we’re also getting a steady stream of comments. A fan recently left a comment that said something like,

“Can you stop using the URL shortening sites? They tend to make me hesitate to click the links due to so many phishing attempts on the Web.”

My first thought was, “Sites like bit.ly really help clean up the links.” But then I stopped and thought, “Not using the shortening services will make the user experience better for this fan.”

Sure, sharing the full link isn’t exactly sexy, but if doing so creates a better user experience… that’s exactly what needs to be done. By keeping an open mind you can better your fan pages and possibly increase fan interaction.

The benefit of using a shortened link is the tracking features that go along with them. You can see what is working and what is not, and then move forward by providing links and content that your fans/followers will click on.

Jen, you can track clicks in the Dashboard.

Also, no matter if you can track or not, if your audience request something that helps them feel more secure you should likely go with it. It’s an instance where you have to take off your marketing hat… but that’s just my opinion.
