A “Must Have” in My Email Marketing Toolbox

by Ryan Shell on May 15, 2012

Casually sending an email and email marketing are two very different things.

The latter, in essence, is almost like a science. Why? Because there are a ton of different variables in play that impact performance and engagement with your audience.

But there’s one aspect of email marketing that I’m pretty big on; it also happens to be an element that is often overlooked or completely ignored: the autoresponder.

Don’t Skip this Email Marketing Step

by Ryan Shell on May 4, 2012

Even thought it’s been around ever since Al Gore invented the Internet(s), email marketing continues to resemble something similar to the Wild Wild West for many marketers.

And that’s exactly why so many marketers get it wrong, or fail to follow general best practices.

Marketers, by nature, like for things to look “pretty,” but pretty isn’t always “best” when it comes to email marketing.

Here are a few examples of where pretty becomes problematic:

tumblr 1

At this point a massive amount of people are using Tumblr to publish both professional and personal blogs.

It’s an incredibly user friendly system, but there’s one little trick that I’ve noticed a lot of people overlooking.

One of the options Tumblr gives users is the ability to connect their posts to a Twitter account. Doing so allows you to check a box that prompts Tumblr to tweet the post once it’s published. If you simply check the box Tumblr will pre-format the tweet (doesn’t always provide the right message), but there’s a way to customize what is tweeted and that’s what I’ll show you how to do in this post.

Customer Service: Moving Boxes Style

by Ryan Shell on April 27, 2012

It really is the simple things in life that make people happy.

Here’s a classic example that shows customer service really isn’t all that hard.

I’m moving apartments in New York City. If you think moving in a suburban setting stinks, try moving in the city – every aspect of it basically stinks. From finding a new apartment to packing your stuff, it’s not fun.

Speaking of packing your stuff, you have to put it in boxes… and getting boxes from point A to B is a task in and of itself.

Introducing the Influencer 2.0

by Ryan Shell on April 23, 2012

@OscarPRGirl Avatar

Much has been talked about the influencer – individuals, normally a 3rd party, that have a media platform and, in most instances, a sizable audience, or one in which they can get to take action.

That form of the influencer won’t be going away, but it will continue to evolve and get more refined as time goes on and research tools get more advanced.

But, there’s more to the influencer picture, and I’d like to introduce you to version 2.0.

Working with Bloggers 101

by Ryan Shell on April 17, 2012

My last blog post touched on something that has started to somewhat drive me crazy.

And that’s the idea that businesses, and agencies on their behalf, reach out to bloggers and basically want content and back links published for free. As in, zero compensation kind of free.

In the post I mentioned that I didn’t start my fashion blog (my personal side project) to make money, but as more time is invested in the site I’ve set goals, one of which is generating revenue. And I’m not talking about buying a yacht kind of revenue, but it would be great to pay for things such as:

Talking Fashion on TV

by Ryan Shell on April 16, 2012

I won’t even begin to hide the fact that I love being on TV. It brings up memories from my radio days and and no matter if I’m delivering good news or bad news a spokesperson, it never gets old.

But this segment doesn’t have to do with good news or bad news about a company or anything of that nature. It has to do with fashion. Yes, fashion.

The Fox affiliate back home in NC reached out about having me do a reoccurring street style photography segment after seeing my photos on Fashables – my fashion blog. It was a random request, but I jumped at the opportunity without thinking twice.

Can We Stop with the Stupidity Please?!

by Ryan Shell on April 13, 2012

Look, I’m a nice guy.

Seriously, I am.

But there comes a point where you have to throw your hands up in the air and say, “Can we stop with the stupidity please?!” That’s basically what happened after receiving (yet again) another pitch from someone at an agency trying to get their clients content and a backlink published on my fashion blog.

Again, I’m not trying to be mean here, but I’m going to share the email exchange just so you can see how this plays out and hopefully NEVER do this – especially what was done in the person’s final email to me.

My 60 Second Date with Your Resume

by Ryan Shell on April 2, 2012

I’ve been looking at a lot of resumes lately and some things have come to mind along the way.

By no means am I an expert resume writer or the head of human resources, but what I can do is share feedback on how I (personally) react when seeing a resume.

And I very well could be crazy in how I handle resumes, but at least you’ll understand how a crazy person reviews your info.

Here’s a quick rundown of what comes to mind/happens when I first look at a resume – and we’re talking about within the 60 seconds.

3 Community Manager Transition Tips

by Ryan Shell on March 27, 2012

In addition to working in the world of PR/Marketing, I run a little men’s and women’s fashion blog on the side for fun.

It’s not the biggest site in the world, but it’s gained enough traction to prompt various brand relationships to be created over time.

Speaking of those relationships, something happened the other day that felt wrong; almost as if the person on the other end of the conversation (on Twitter) had no clue of the relationship that had been established between their brand and my fashion blog.
